Privacera was founded in 2016 by the original creators of Apache Ranger and Apache Atlas, the open-source frameworks that have long been the default way to manage data access policy in Hadoop environments. Privacera’s commercial platform extends that same fine-grained, policy-based access control model to modern cloud data stacks — Databricks, Snowflake, AWS, Azure, and GCP — letting enterprises define who can access which data, under what conditions, from a single control plane instead of managing separate permission systems in every platform.

That open-source pedigree is a meaningful credibility signal in a category where many vendors have no comparable track record: Apache Ranger remains widely deployed, and Privacera’s founding team has been solving this specific problem for over a decade. The company’s more recent product, PAIG (Privacera AI Governance), extends the same access-governance model to generative AI, aiming to give enterprises visibility and control over what data feeds into AI models and what those models can expose in their outputs — a natural extension of data access governance into a newer risk category.

Based in Fremont, California, Privacera raised a $50 million Series B in 2021 led by Insight Partners, with participation from Sapphire Ventures, Battery Ventures, and Accel, and has reported reaching roughly $38.5 million in annual revenue and 500 customers by 2024 — concrete business metrics that go beyond typical vendor marketing claims, even though they are self-reported. With around 100-plus employees, Privacera remains a mid-size, growth-stage company competing in a data governance and security category that has become considerably more crowded as enterprises grapple with securing data for AI use cases.
