Palo Alto Networks (Cortex Xpanse)
Global cybersecurity platform vendor whose Cortex Xpanse product performs continuous, agentless internet-wide external attack surface scanning.
Visit Website ↗Overview
Palo Alto Networks, founded in 2005, built Cortex Xpanse on technology acquired with Expanse Inc. in 2020. Xpanse is an external attack surface management (EASM) product that continuously scans the global IPv4 address space, reportedly indexing hundreds of billions of ports daily, to find internet-facing assets an organization may not know it owns — shadow IT, forgotten cloud instances, misconfigured exposures, and subsidiary or M&A-related infrastructure.
The technical approach is agentless and outside-in: rather than relying on an organization to register its own assets, Xpanse independently discovers what is actually reachable from the internet and correlates that back to ownership signals. This makes it useful for identifying blind spots that asset-inventory-dependent tools miss, and it extends to assessing the exposure of third-party suppliers.
As part of Palo Alto Networks’ much larger Cortex and platform business, Xpanse benefits from the parent company’s scale, integration with XSOAR for automated response workflows, and a very large existing enterprise customer base, but it is one module within a sprawling portfolio rather than a focused point solution.
Innovation Matrix Assessment
Web ASM and expanded coverage features have shipped in recent release cycles, per Palo Alto Networks' own product blog.
Continuous, agentless internet-wide scanning surfaces genuinely unknown assets that inventory-dependent tools miss, which is operationally valuable for shadow-IT discovery.
Backed by Palo Alto Networks' large, growing public-company revenue base and broad enterprise distribution.
Outside-in, agentless internet scanning is a genuinely different discovery model than agent- or inventory-based scanning, though the EASM category itself now has multiple competitors.
Internet-scale scanning claims (hundreds of billions of ports daily) are vendor-stated; independent efficacy benchmarks were not located in this research.
External attack surface visibility remains highly relevant as cloud sprawl and shadow IT continue to expand unmanaged exposure.
Why CISOs Should Care
Xpanse finds internet-facing assets security teams did not know they had — a persistent blind spot that inventory-based tools structurally cannot see, since they only report what's already registered.
What Makes It Different
An agentless, outside-in scanning model that discovers assets independent of internal inventory, rather than relying on an organization to register what it owns.
The Matrix Verdict
65/100 — INCREMENTAL INNOVATOR
A capable, well-resourced EASM offering riding on a dominant platform vendor's distribution; genuinely useful but competing in an increasingly crowded attack-surface-management category.
Editorial Note: Claims vs. Verified Findings
Scanning scale figures (port counts, IPv4 coverage frequency) come from Palo Alto Networks' own marketing materials and were not independently verified.
