LuxQuanta is a Barcelona company, spun out of the ICFO photonics research institute in 2021, that develops continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD). Its NOVA LQ system, launched in 2023, targets intra-city networks and supports point-to-point and point-to-multipoint setups.
The system is stated to comply with ETSI GS QKD 014 and SKIP interfaces for integration with multi-vendor encryptors. In October 2025 it closed an €8m Series A led by Big Sur Ventures with A&G as largest investor, following a €2.5m EIC grant.
Innovation Matrix Assessment
Moved from research spin-off to a commercial CV-QKD product and a second generation.
QKD adds key-distribution assurance for high-value links, but needs fibre and special hardware.
€8m Series A plus EIC grant; sales claims are company-reported.
CV-QKD using telecom-compatible components is a differentiated approach within QKD.
Standards-aligned interfaces help, but no independent field-test results located.
Quantum-safe key exchange is a long-horizon need, though PQC competes for the same budget.
Why CISOs Should Care
Organisations protecting critical long-lived data links get a hardware-based option for quantum-safe key exchange.
What Makes It Different
Uses continuous-variable QKD that leverages standard telecom components instead of single-photon detectors.
The Matrix Verdict
60/100 — INCREMENTAL INNOVATOR
LuxQuanta scores 60/100 (Incremental Innovator). A genuine quantum-key-distribution hardware vendor with credible funding; commercial scale is still early.
Editorial Note: Claims vs. Verified Findings
Sales reach and deployment claims are the company's own; funding and ETSI interface compliance are reported by press and company releases.
