LQUOM, founded in 2020 by Kazuya Niizeki and Tomoyuki Horikiri as a Yokohama National University spin-out, develops hardware for quantum repeater systems – quantum light sources, quantum memory and interfaces – for long-distance quantum communication and a future quantum internet. In April 2026 it announced a Series B totalling about JPY 1.23 billion with investors including SBI Investment, ORIX Capital, Osaka University Venture Capital, SMBC Venture Capital, Anritsu, Nissay Capital, MPower Partners and SCREEN Holdings.
In March 2026 Toshiba and LQUOM announced joint research on long-distance QKD using quantum repeaters.
Innovation Matrix Assessment
Active R&D with a Toshiba collaboration and a Series B.
Pre-commercial; no operational deployments described.
Strong funding round and strategic investors, but no customers.
Quantum repeaters are a foundational, category-defining technology if realized.
Research stage; no independent validation of real-world performance.
A quantum internet is a long-horizon but strategically significant goal.
Why CISOs Should Care
Quantum repeaters are what would let quantum key distribution work over long distances, a prerequisite for eavesdrop-proof networks.
What Makes It Different
Focuses on the repeater hardware layer rather than point-to-point QKD links.
The Matrix Verdict
53/100 — INCREMENTAL INNOVATOR
A well-funded, research-stage quantum repeater company with a Toshiba research tie; commercial products and deployments are not yet available.
Editorial Note: Claims vs. Verified Findings
The company is at an R&D stage, and its security benefits are prospective. Funding totals differ across sources; the April 2026 Series B figure is recorded.
