Cohesity
Backup and data management platform that merged with Veritas's enterprise data protection business in 2024 to become the largest data protection software vendor by scale.
Visit Website ↗Overview
Cohesity is a data management and backup platform, originally built on a hyperconverged secondary-storage architecture designed to consolidate backup, file services, and analytics onto a single data plane instead of siloed point products. In December 2024 it completed a merger with Veritas’s enterprise data protection business (the NetBackup lineage), acquired from Carlyle Group for roughly $3 billion, creating a combined company Cohesity describes as the world’s largest data protection software provider by customer count, serving around 12,000 customers.
Product lines include DataProtect for backup and recovery, FortKnox as an isolated ransomware-recovery vault, and Security Advisor for malware and anomaly detection across backup data. Founder Mohit Aron (previously a Nutanix co-founder) stepped back from the CEO role in 2022, replaced by Sanjay Poonen.
The Veritas combination is primarily a scale and consolidation move — buying customer base and revenue — rather than a technology-driven disruption, and it introduces meaningful integration work across two large, previously separate product portfolios.
Innovation Matrix Assessment
Large-scale post-merger integration with Veritas typically slows organic product velocity in the near term.
Consolidated DataProtect/FortKnox/Security Advisor stack covers backup, isolated recovery, and anomaly detection in one platform.
The Veritas merger delivered massive scale (~12,000 customers, ~$7B combined value), though this reflects consolidation more than organic growth.
A classic backup-market consolidation play rather than a structurally new data-protection model.
FortKnox and Security Advisor address ransomware resilience directly, but no independent named-incident evidence was found in this research.
Remains highly relevant to enterprise backup at scale, though the merger genericizes its prior architectural differentiation.
Why CISOs Should Care
Consolidates two of the largest backup estates in the industry (Cohesity and Veritas NetBackup) under one roof, simplifying vendor management for large enterprises already running either platform.
What Makes It Different
Built originally on a hyperconverged secondary-storage architecture to unify backup, files, and analytics on one data plane instead of siloed point products, though the Veritas merger now reintroduces some of that product sprawl.
The Matrix Verdict
57/100 — INCREMENTAL INNOVATOR
A scale play more than a disruption play: the Veritas combination buys massive customer and revenue scale, but integration risk and legacy technology debt keep this in the solid-but-unremarkable tier rather than transformational.
Editorial Note: Claims vs. Verified Findings
Merger valuation, customer counts, and deal structure are independently reported (TechCrunch, Cohesity press materials); specific ransomware-recovery performance claims for FortKnox and Security Advisor were not independently verified here.
