Canopy (Canopy Software), based in Reston, Virginia, builds software to help organizations assess the information exposed in a data breach and identify which individuals may be affected. It was released in 2018 by eDiscovery veterans Ralph Nickl and Oran Sears, who saw that eDiscovery tools were poorly suited to breach response. Its technology includes Auto Review, an agentic-AI capability that automates the initial data mining and review.
Epiq announced the acquisition of Canopy on September 25, 2026, bringing Canopy’s technology, engineering team and cyber response specialists in-house and planning to integrate the platform into Epiq AI. Financial terms were not disclosed; the deal built on an existing partnership between the two companies.
Innovation Matrix Assessment
Added an agentic Auto Review capability to a mature product; steady rather than rapid.
Purpose-built for the labor-intensive PII review step of breach response, a real and costly pain point for response teams.
A long-running partnership with Epiq and an acquisition show relevance, but customer counts and revenue aren't public.
Breach-specific review software is a differentiated niche but not a new category.
A Golden Bridge award is the only external recognition found; no independent efficacy data.
Breach notification obligations keep growing, supporting continued need for fast data-exposure review.
Why CISOs Should Care
After an incident, the slow, costly step is working out whose personal data was exposed so notifications can be made. Canopy targets that review step with purpose-built tooling.
What Makes It Different
Built specifically for breach response rather than adapted from general eDiscovery, with patented PII-detection and an agentic 'Auto Review' to cut initial review time.
The Matrix Verdict
55/100 — INCREMENTAL INNOVATOR
A focused breach-response specialist with a clear niche and an exit to a scaled services provider; limited public detail on customers or independent results.
Editorial Note: Claims vs. Verified Findings
The 'patented' technology and time-saving claims for Auto Review are company statements; no independent benchmark was found.
