Awareness Technologies develops InterGuard, an insider threat and employee monitoring platform that records and analyzes user activity — emails, chats, web browsing, file transfers, and application usage — across PCs, Macs, virtual desktops, and mobile devices to detect data exfiltration, policy violations, and insider risk. The platform bundles data loss prevention controls (blocking sensitive data from leaving via email, web forms, or removable media) with user activity recording, positioning it at the intersection of insider threat detection and traditional employee monitoring/productivity software.

Founded in 2002 in Westport, Connecticut as the maker of WebWatcher — software originally built for counter-terrorism and intelligence use cases before pivoting toward business and consumer monitoring — the company was acquired by private equity firm TZP Group, which has continued to grow its InterGuard and related WebWatcher/Veriato product lines through additional acquisitions such as Screen Time Labs. The company reports that InterGuard is used by more than 10,000 companies with over 200,000 total monitored users, figures that come from the vendor itself rather than an independent audit.

Because InterGuard’s core function is comprehensive activity recording of employees’ communications and files, its market position sits closer to the insider-threat/DLP category than to network- or endpoint-focused security tools, and its efficacy is best understood as a monitoring and evidentiary capability rather than an automated threat-blocking one. The technology is real and long-established, but as a private-equity-owned company with a long operating history, Awareness Technologies competes today primarily on breadth of monitored surfaces and price rather than on a novel technical approach.
