Anonos

Anonos builds Data Embassy, a data protection platform centered on what it calls "Variant Twins" — copies of a source dataset that are re-engineered field by field so each copy carries only the risk and identifiability appropriate to a specific downstream use, while remaining statistically usable for that purpose. The underlying technique, branded BigPrivacy, combines pseudonymization, tokenization, and controlled data transformation so that protection travels embedded in the data itself rather than depending on the receiving system’s access controls. That framing is aimed squarely at a problem most data protection tools do not solve well: making data usable for analytics, AI training, or cross-border sharing without simply decrypting it back into its original identifiable form.

Founded around 2012 and led by CEO and General Counsel Gary LaFever, Anonos has built its case studies and regulatory positioning heavily around GDPR and, more specifically, the EU Schrems II ruling, which restricts transferring EU personal data to jurisdictions like the United States without additional technical safeguards. Anonos submitted its methodology to European data protection regulators as a candidate for exactly this kind of supplemental measure. The company has raised a $12 million growth investment from Edison Partners and separately secured $50 million in IP-backed financing, and became a founding member of Informatica’s ISV partner program, giving it a path to be embedded inside a much larger data management ecosystem rather than sold only as a standalone tool.

Gartner named Anonos a Cool Vendor for its BigPrivacy approach and included it in a Hype Cycle writeup for synthetic-data-adjacent techniques, which is useful third-party validation of the concept, though it is not the same as an independent technical evaluation of how well the transformation holds up against re-identification attacks at scale. For privacy, legal, and data teams evaluating how to keep data-driven and AI initiatives moving under GDPR, CCPA, and cross-border transfer rules, Anonos is a specialist worth including in a shortlist alongside broader data security posture and tokenization vendors.
