Alcatraz AI sells facial authentication hardware and software for physical access control. Its Rock X and Rock edge devices, RockOS firmware and Rock Cortex management platform support turnstiles, multi-factor entry, tailgating detection and perimeter use cases.
The company was founded in 2016 by a former Apple engineer who worked on Face ID, and is headquartered in Cupertino, California. It announced a $50 million Series B in April 2026 led by BlackPeak Capital, Cogito Capital and Taiwania Capital.
It lists universities, airports, healthcare and life-science firms among its deployments, and says it operates in about 50 countries.
Innovation Matrix Assessment
Edge-based 3D facial authentication with an integrated platform; steady product expansion, though many features are incremental to the access-control category.
Removes badge handling and tailgating exposure, tying physical identity to the access-control stack.
$50M Series B in April 2026 from named investors and many named customer logos (MIT, Moderna, AstraZeneca, airports).
Facial biometrics for access control is established; Alcatraz differentiates on on-device processing and form factor.
Named deployments exist but no independent test results were found.
Physical-logical identity convergence will continue to matter, though biometric privacy regulation is a risk.
Why CISOs Should Care
Physical access is part of the identity perimeter; biometric entry can reduce badge sharing and tailgating in sensitive facilities.
What Makes It Different
Processes facial authentication on dedicated 3D edge devices and manages them via a central platform instead of relying on card credentials.
The Matrix Verdict
58/100 — INCREMENTAL INNOVATOR
Alcatraz AI is an Incremental Innovator with strong market evidence and solid execution, but limited category disruption and no independent efficacy data found.
