Veeam
Privately held backup and ransomware-recovery software vendor whose Data Platform protects VMware, cloud, SaaS, and Kubernetes workloads at large scale.
Visit Website ↗Overview
Veeam is a privately held backup and ransomware-recovery software vendor whose Veeam Data Platform protects VMware and Hyper-V virtual machines, physical servers, Microsoft 365, Salesforce, Kubernetes, and major public clouds. Founded in 2006 and acquired by Insight Partners in 2020 for roughly $5 billion, Veeam has grown into one of the largest backup vendors by revenue, reporting more than $1.75 billion in annual recurring revenue for 2024 and targeting $2 billion-plus in 2025; a December 2024 secondary share sale valued the company at roughly $15 billion.
In October 2025 Veeam agreed to acquire data-security and AI-governance vendor Securiti AI for $1.725 billion, a deal that closed in December 2025, signaling a push to add data-security and compliance capability on top of its core backup platform.
Veeam’s differentiation is primarily breadth of platform support and market penetration built up over nearly two decades, rather than a novel data-protection architecture; the Securiti acquisition is an attempt to buy the disruption it hasn’t built organically.
Innovation Matrix Assessment
Steady platform expansion plus the October 2025 agreement to acquire Securiti AI to add data-security capability.
Broad hypervisor, cloud, SaaS, and container coverage built over nearly two decades.
Over $1.75B ARR in 2024 heading toward $2B in 2025, and a ~$15B valuation from a December 2024 secondary sale.
A traditional backup vendor whose recent growth in capability comes largely from acquisition rather than novel architecture.
Widely deployed with a strong market reputation, though no independent, named recovery-outcome evidence was found in this research.
Backup remains essential infrastructure, though the core category is increasingly commoditized.
Why CISOs Should Care
One of the most widely deployed backup platforms in the world, so recovery expertise and third-party integrations are abundant, lowering operational risk in executing the recovery plan itself.
What Makes It Different
Veeam's differentiation is less architectural and more about breadth of platform coverage (hypervisors, cloud, SaaS, containers) achieved through steady engineering investment and, now, acquisition (Securiti AI) rather than a fundamentally new data-protection model.
The Matrix Verdict
58/100 — INCREMENTAL INNOVATOR
A financially dominant, PE-backed incumbent with enormous ARR and installed base; lands in the solid tier because its core recovery technology is mature and the Securiti acquisition is a bid to buy disruption rather than build it organically.
Editorial Note: Claims vs. Verified Findings
Revenue, valuation, and employee figures are drawn from press coverage and Insight Partners statements; independent, named recovery-outcome evidence was not found in this research.
