Proofpoint operates as a large, established enterprise cybersecurity provider delivering cloud-based email security, identity threat defense, data loss prevention (DLP), electronic discovery, and email archiving as a software-as-a-service portfolio. Its human-centric security approach focuses on protecting people — the primary target of phishing, business email compromise, and credential-theft attacks — rather than only network infrastructure.

Founded in 2002 by former Netscape CTO Eric Hahn and headquartered in Sunnyvale, California, Proofpoint went public in 2012 before being acquired by private equity firm Thoma Bravo in August 2021 for $12.3 billion, taking the company private. Since the acquisition, Proofpoint has continued to expand its portfolio through acquisitions, including data security posture management vendor Normalyze in October 2024.
