Overview

Banyan Security, founded in 2015 in San Francisco, built a zero trust network access (ZTNA) platform that replaces traditional VPN tunnels with per-application, identity- and device-trust-scored access. Rather than granting broad network-level access once a user connects, the platform evaluates device posture and identity continuously and brokers access to individual on-premises, hybrid, or multi-cloud applications under least-privilege principles.

SonicWall acquired Banyan Security in December 2023 for an undisclosed sum, folding its roughly 50-person team and ZTNA/security service edge (SSE) technology into SonicWall’s broader SASE portfolio. The acquisition gave SonicWall a cloud-native zero trust offering to pair with its existing network security and endpoint products, sold through SonicWall’s existing channel rather than as an independent startup brand.

The platform’s differentiator is its device-trust scoring combined with microsegmentation to reduce the attack surface for both managed and unmanaged, bring-your-own devices. Since the acquisition, its independent product roadmap and go-to-market have been absorbed into SonicWall’s own strategy, which changes how its ongoing innovation should be read relative to a standalone startup.

Innovation Matrix Assessment

Innovation Velocity 5/10

Independent product cadence ended with the 2023 acquisition; ongoing development is now paced by SonicWall's own SASE/SSE integration roadmap rather than a standalone startup's velocity.

Operational Value 7/10

Device-trust scoring and per-application, least-privilege access meaningfully reduce lateral-movement risk compared to legacy VPN access, a real operational win for security teams.

Market Momentum 6/10

SonicWall's acquisition gives the technology a large existing distribution channel and customer base, offsetting the loss of an independent funding/growth narrative.

Category Disruption 4/10

ZTNA is now a mature, widely-adopted category rather than a novel approach in 2026; Banyan's architecture is solid but not category-redefining at this point.

Real-World Efficacy 5/10

No independent, named-incident efficacy evidence was found; claims of reduced attack surface and lateral movement come from SonicWall's own product and blog material.

Enduring Relevance 6/10

Zero trust access remains foundational to enterprise security architecture, and SonicWall's distribution should keep the technology relevant for existing customers for years.

Why CISOs Should Care

Replaces fragile, perimeter-based VPN access with continuously scored, least-privilege access to specific applications, shrinking lateral-movement risk without a network re-architecture.

What Makes It Different

Evaluates device trust and identity per-request to broker access to individual applications rather than the whole network, and is now bundled into SonicWall's SASE/SSE portfolio instead of sold standalone.

The Matrix Verdict

55/100 — INCREMENTAL INNOVATOR

A sound, mature ZTNA approach that lands as an Incremental Innovator: the architecture holds up and now has SonicWall's distribution behind it, but the 2023 acquisition ties its innovation signal to SonicWall's own roadmap, and ZTNA itself is no longer a novel category.

Editorial Note: Claims vs. Verified Findings

Device-trust scoring and access-reduction claims come from SonicWall's own product and blog material; no independent, named-incident efficacy evidence was found in available coverage.
