Overview

Vouched is a Seattle-based identity verification company, founded in 2018 as a spinout of Madrona Venture Labs. Its core product performs AI-assisted identity verification for people – document capture, data extraction, and selfie-based liveness checks – used by enterprises in sectors like healthcare, telemedicine, and financial services to confirm who a user is during onboarding.

In 2025 the company extended that identity model to AI agents through a suite it calls Know Your Agent (KYA), built on an MCP-Identity extension to the Model Context Protocol. KYA aims to tie together three things when an AI agent takes an action on a platform: the agent itself, the human or organization behind it, and the specific authority the agent has been granted, using decentralized identifiers and verifiable credentials. A companion public directory, KnowThat.ai, lets organizations look up and report on the reputation of AI agents operating across the web, similar in spirit to how a business reputation directory works for human-run services.

Vouched raised a $17 million Series A in September 2025, led by Spring Rock Ventures, specifically to scale KYA and KnowThat.ai, following a $6.3 million round in 2023 (backed in part by Zulily co-founders Darrell Cavens and Mark Vadon) and a $3 million round in 2020. The funding history and sustained investor interest point to real momentum in its core human-verification business, but the AI-agent identity layer is new, and independent evidence of its effectiveness at scale – as opposed to the company’s own description – was not found.

Innovation Matrix Assessment

Innovation Velocity 7/10

Moved from a mature human-identity-verification product to launching an MCP-based agent identity framework (KYA) and a public reputation directory (KnowThat.ai) within a single funding cycle.

Operational Value 7/10

Gives security and compliance teams a concrete way to verify both the humans behind a transaction and, increasingly, the AI agents acting on their behalf - a real and growing operational gap.

Market Momentum 6/10

Three funding rounds since 2020 culminating in a $17M Series A specifically earmarked for the agent-identity product, led by a named institutional investor, is genuine evidence of sustained momentum for a company of its size.

Category Disruption 6/10

Extending identity verification from humans to AI agents addresses a real emerging gap in IAM, though Vouched competes with an established and crowded human-IDV market and several newer agent-identity entrants.

Real-World Efficacy 5/10

The core human-verification product has years of production use, but the agent-identity (KYA/KnowThat.ai) layer is newly launched with no independent performance data yet.

Enduring Relevance 7/10

As AI agents take on more autonomous actions on enterprise systems, verifying both agent identity and granted authority is likely to become a standard IAM requirement over the next several years.

Why CISOs Should Care

Lets a CISO extend existing identity governance to cover not just employees and customers but the AI agents now acting on a company's systems, closing a gap most IAM stacks do not yet address.

What Makes It Different

Builds agent identity on top of an existing, funded human-verification business and an open protocol (MCP) extension rather than starting from a greenfield agent-identity product alone.

The Matrix Verdict

63/100 — INCREMENTAL INNOVATOR

A Meaningful-leaning Incremental Innovator: a financially established identity-verification vendor with real funding and product history that is credibly, if recently, extending into AI agent identity - promising but not yet proven at the agent-identity layer specifically.

Editorial Note: Claims vs. Verified Findings

Human identity-verification maturity and funding history are independently reported across multiple outlets; KYA/KnowThat.ai effectiveness claims come primarily from Vouched's own press materials and have not been independently tested.
