AWS Wickr

AWS Wickr is Amazon’s end-to-end encrypted messaging, voice, video, and file-sharing platform, originally built by Wickr Inc. (founded 2012) and acquired by AWS in 2021. It targets regulated and high-assurance environments — government, defense, financial services, healthcare — where organizations need collaboration tools that neither the vendor nor an attacker who breaches the vendor’s infrastructure can read. Every message, call, and file is encrypted locally on the sending device with a unique key per communication; AWS states it cannot decrypt Wickr traffic because it never holds the decryption keys.

The government-focused variant, AWS WickrGov, runs in AWS GovCloud (US-West) and classified regions, and has achieved FedRAMP High authorization plus DoD Impact Level 2, 4, and 5 accreditation, positioning it for classified and mission-critical use by federal agencies and defense customers. The platform supports NATO STANAG 5636 and ACP-240 coalition-messaging standards along with IC-TDF for intelligence-community data-labeling workflows, and uses FIPS 140-2/3 validated cryptographic modules.

Since the acquisition, AWS has kept Wickr on a steady incremental release cadence — file previews, guest-user access, view-only security groups — rather than a startup-style rapid iteration pace, reflecting its integration into AWS’s broader compliance and release infrastructure. For CISOs evaluating encrypted-communications vendors, the differentiator is not the encryption itself (many vendors offer AES-256/E2EE) but the independently issued FedRAMP High and DoD IL5 accreditations backing it.
