Index Engines’ flagship product, CyberSense, is a ransomware and data-corruption detection engine that integrates with enterprise backup and storage platforms — including Dell PowerProtect Cyber Recovery, Hitachi Vantara, IBM, and Infinidat — to analyze backup snapshots at the byte level for signs of ransomware-induced corruption, rather than scanning production systems directly. The engine is trained by a research lab that continuously detonates real ransomware strains, and it is positioned as the last line of defense for confirming a genuinely clean recovery point before an organization restores from backup after an attack.

Founded in 2003 and headquartered in Holmdel, New Jersey, Index Engines originally focused on enterprise data archiving and e-discovery indexing before pivoting toward cyber resilience. Rather than selling CyberSense as a standalone consumer product, the company OEMs the technology into partner platforms — most notably as the analytics engine inside Dell’s PowerProtect Cyber Recovery vault, and, per an October 2025 announcement, integrated into Hitachi Vantara’s enterprise recovery offerings.

Index Engines’ byte-level, backup-side detection approach trained on live detonated ransomware is a distinctive technical method relative to generic anomaly-detection backup tools, and its embedding inside major vendors’ own recovery products is a meaningful real-world adoption signal. Its headline accuracy figures, however, are vendor-published and were not found benchmarked by an independent third-party test in public sources.
