MDaemon Technologies

MDaemon Technologies, headquartered in Grapevine, Texas, has been developing email and email security software since 1996, when it was founded as Alt-N Technologies. The company briefly became a subsidiary of Research In Motion (BlackBerry’s parent) in 2009 as part of a deal to bundle MDaemon with BlackBerry Enterprise Server support for small businesses, but that arrangement was reversed in 2012 when Alt-N’s management team re-acquired the company on independent terms. In January 2018, the company formally changed its legal name to MDaemon Technologies to align with its flagship product line — it has operated independently of BlackBerry for well over a decade.

The company’s two core products are the MDaemon Messaging Server, an on-premise and hosted email/groupware platform aimed at small-to-midsize businesses, and SecurityGateway for Email Servers, a dedicated email security gateway providing anti-spam, anti-phishing, anti-malware filtering, policy-based encryption, and data leak prevention. Both products deploy on-premise, in the cloud, or in hybrid configurations and integrate with Microsoft 365 and Exchange environments, with the company reporting customers across roughly 140 countries.

MDaemon operates in a mature, well-established segment of the email security market where cloud-native, API-based competitors have introduced newer detection approaches over the past several years. MDaemon’s differentiation is largely around affordability and flexible deployment options (including fully on-premise, which some newer cloud-only competitors do not offer) rather than novel detection technology, and it remains privately held with no venture funding history found.
