RackTop Systems builds BrickStor SP, a “Cyberstorage” platform that combines unstructured data storage with real-time behavioral detection and automated response built directly into the storage layer. Rather than relying solely on perimeter or endpoint tools bolted onto a conventional storage array, BrickStor is designed to detect and stop live ransomware encryption, data exfiltration, and insider-threat activity against file shares as it happens, while also supporting pre-attack cyber hygiene and post-attack forensics and recovery.

Founded in 2010 in Fulton, Maryland by Eric Bednash and Jonathan Halstuch, both veterans of the U.S. intelligence community, RackTop raised a $15M Series A round in 2019 led by Razor’s Edge Ventures and Grotech Ventures (roughly $17.4M raised to date), and reported around 54 employees as of the end of 2022. The company has built out its reach through OEM and channel partnerships, including integrations with Scale Computing’s hyperconverged infrastructure, Seagate storage hardware, and Merative’s healthcare data platform, positioning BrickStor for healthcare, finance, energy, and government customers.

Cyberstorage, the idea of building active defense into the storage layer rather than treating storage purely as a passive target to be protected from outside, is a real and increasingly relevant response to ransomware’s focus on unstructured file data. RackTop’s intelligence-community pedigree and growing OEM relationships lend it credibility, though it remains a modestly sized company whose most recently disclosed funding round dates to 2019.
