Overview

Venn is a New York-based data protection vendor whose product, Blue Border, secures company data and applications on unmanaged BYOD Macs and PCs without requiring virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) or full mobile device management enrollment. Installing Blue Border creates a company-controlled secure enclave directly on the employee’s or contractor’s own device: business apps, data, and networking run locally inside a visually marked boundary, isolated from anything else happening on that same computer.

The pitch is replacing VDI and traditional MDM for BYOD and contractor workforces — VDI is notoriously expensive, latency-prone, and operationally heavy to maintain, while full MDM enrollment on a personal device raises privacy and adoption friction. Blue Border instead enforces zero-trust access controls and DLP policies (blocking copy/paste, uploads, and data exfiltration) at the application and enclave level, and the company has more recently extended this to govern what corporate data can be shared into AI tools from within the enclave.

Founded in 2019 by David Matalon (previously co-founder of OS33, a secure workspace vendor for regulated financial firms) and Alex Osipov, Venn publicly revealed million in Series A funding led by NewSpring Capital in June 2023, alongside a patent covering its “MDM for laptops” approach. Note that a separate, unrelated company also named Venn (an Israel-based proptech rental-matching platform) exists and is sometimes conflated with this company in funding databases — the figures above are specific to the cybersecurity vendor at venn.com. Venn’s real differentiator is avoiding VDI’s infrastructure cost and latency entirely, though as a mid-sized company it competes against both larger zero-trust/BYOD vendors and traditional VDI incumbents (Citrix, VMware).

Innovation Matrix Assessment

Innovation Velocity 6/10

Venn has extended Blue Border from core BYOD DLP into AI-usage governance within the same enclave, showing continued feature investment aligned with a current enterprise concern (shadow AI data leakage).

Operational Value 7/10

Avoiding VDI's server infrastructure and running work applications locally inside an enclave is a real operational advantage for latency and cost versus traditional virtual desktop deployments, particularly for distributed contractor workforces.

Market Momentum 5/10

Venn publicly revealed in Series A funding led by NewSpring Capital in June 2023, alongside a patent for its BYOD/'MDM for laptops' approach -- a solid, independently reported funding and IP signal for a company of this size, though no larger subsequent round has been publicly confirmed.

Category Disruption 7/10

Delivering full data/app isolation on an unmanaged device without VDI or device-level management enrollment is a structurally different approach than either traditional VDI or standard MDM/containerization, which supports a strong disruption score.

Real-World Efficacy 5/10

Venn publishes case studies and product-tour materials describing DLP and enclave behavior, but no independent, third-party security assessment or named large-enterprise breach-prevention result was found to corroborate its isolation claims.

Enduring Relevance 7/10

Contractor and BYOD workforce security, plus governance of what data employees paste into AI tools, are both live, high-priority concerns for CISOs today, making Venn's focus timely and broadly applicable.

Why CISOs Should Care

CISOs managing contractor, remote, or BYOD workforces get enterprise data protection and DLP on personal devices without the cost of VDI or the privacy backlash of full MDM enrollment.

What Makes It Different

Venn's local-enclave architecture avoids the server-side infrastructure and latency of VDI entirely, unlike most secure-remote-access competitors that still route through virtualized desktops or gateways.

The Matrix Verdict

62/100 — INCREMENTAL INNOVATOR

A well-differentiated approach to BYOD and contractor data protection with a clear cost/latency advantage over VDI; genuinely useful for CISOs managing distributed non-employee workforces, though independent efficacy validation is still limited.

Editorial Note: Claims vs. Verified Findings

The Series A (led by NewSpring Capital, publicly revealed June 2023) and the underlying patent are independently corroborated by SecurityWeek, PR Newswire, and NewSpring's own announcement. We identified a naming collision: some funding databases and press aggregators describe a much larger round for a company called 'Venn,' but that refers to an unrelated Israel-based proptech rental-matching platform, not this cybersecurity vendor -- that figure should not be attributed here. Enclave/DLP efficacy claims are vendor-described and were not independently tested in the public sources we found.
