Agari

Agari’s core technology is identity-based email security: rather than relying purely on signatures or sender reputation blocklists, it models legitimate sender-recipient email relationships with machine learning to flag business email compromise (BEC), executive impersonation, and vendor email compromise that bypass traditional filters. The company was also an early large-scale operator of DMARC authentication and monitoring infrastructure, helping brands enforce domain-spoofing protection across major mailbox providers.

Founded in 2009 in the San Francisco Bay Area (Foster City, California), Agari built a customer base among large enterprises and government agencies before being acquired by HelpSystems (now Fortra) in May 2021 as part of a broader roll-up of email- and data-security assets. The Agari brand and technology now operate as ‘Fortra’s Agari,’ integrated alongside Fortra’s other acquired email-security properties, including PhishLabs’ threat intelligence and takedown services.

Under Fortra ownership, Agari’s detection engine has been folded into a combined authentication-plus-brand-abuse-monitoring offering rather than continuing to operate as an independently roadmapped product. That gives customers a more consolidated Fortra email-security suite, but it also means Agari’s pace of independent innovation is now subordinate to Fortra’s broader portfolio and cross-sell strategy rather than a standalone growth story.
