Arbor Networks

Arbor Networks is the DDoS protection and network threat visibility brand now operated as NETSCOUT’s dedicated security division. Founded in 2000 near Ann Arbor, Michigan, Arbor built its reputation supplying internet service providers with flow-based network monitoring that let them see and mitigate distributed denial-of-service traffic at internet scale, well before ‘DDoS’ was a boardroom term. NETSCOUT Systems, a publicly traded network performance and security company, acquired Arbor in 2015 as part of its purchase of Danaher’s communications business, and has kept the Arbor brand alive as its dedicated security product line rather than folding it into a generic label.

Today’s Arbor product line includes Arbor Edge Defense, an inline perimeter appliance for stateless DDoS mitigation; Arbor Cloud, a managed scrubbing service NETSCOUT states has over 15 Tbps of mitigation capacity across worldwide scrubbing centers; and Arbor Threat Mitigation System (TMS), long positioned as an industry-standard on-premises DDoS mitigation appliance. NETSCOUT states that Arbor technology remains the de facto standard for the majority of the world’s ISPs, cloud providers, and mobile operators defending against DDoS.

Because Arbor is now a division of a public company rather than an independent entity, its financials are not broken out separately, and its pace of innovation is tied to NETSCOUT’s broader security roadmap rather than a dedicated startup’s. The division’s real differentiator is access to NETSCOUT’s global ATLAS threat intelligence, drawn from internet-scale ISP traffic visibility that few independent DDoS vendors can match.
